Dulux Avista Waterbased Concrete Sealer 20L — Low-VOC Protection for Interior & Exterior Concrete
The Dulux Avista Waterbased Concrete Sealer is a premium, water-based protective coating that delivers durable, clear semi-gloss protection for both interior and exterior concrete surfaces. Formulated with low VOC technology, it is the ideal choice for enclosed spaces, poorly ventilated areas, and projects where odour and environmental impact are key considerations — without compromising on performance.
Engineered for versatility, this sealer can be applied to a wide range of substrates including plain concrete, pavers, stamped and stencilled finishes, coloured concrete, exposed aggregate, and even rock and block walls. With excellent UV and fade resistance, good marking and hot tyre pickup resistance, and straightforward water clean-up, it is a favourite among both professional applicators and DIY homeowners alike.
Key Features & Benefits
- Water-Based, Low VOC: Minimal odour and safer for use indoors and in enclosed spaces — no harsh solvent fumes.
- Interior & Exterior Use: One product for all your concrete sealing needs, from garage floors and basement areas to driveways and alfresco spaces.
- Semi-Gloss Finish: Delivers an attractive sheen that enhances colour depth and provides a clean, polished appearance.
- UV & Fade Resistant: Formulated to withstand Australian sunlight without yellowing or degrading.
- Hot Tyre Pickup Resistance: Resists the marking and imprinting that can occur when vehicle tyres rest on sealed surfaces.
- No Primer Required: Can be applied directly over clean, prepared concrete — and is compatible over both existing solvent-based and water-based sealers.
- Excellent Coverage: Covers 5–10 m² per litre — up to 200 m² per 20L pail, making it one of the most economical sealers in the Dulux Avista range.
- Easy Water Clean-Up: Tools and equipment clean up with water — no need for solvents.

Application Guidance
Surface Preparation: Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from dust, dirt, oil, grease, and existing loose coatings. New concrete must be fully cured (minimum 28 days). For previously sealed surfaces, ensure the existing sealer is sound — a test patch is recommended to confirm compatibility.
Application: Apply by roller using a short-nap (5–10 mm) sleeve. Stir the product gently before use — do not shake vigorously as this can introduce air bubbles. Apply thin, even coats. Two coats are recommended for optimal protection and appearance.
Coverage: Approximately 5–10 m² per litre per coat (100–200 m² per 20L pail), depending on surface porosity and profile.
Drying & Curing (at 25 °C, 50% RH):
- Recoat: 2 hours
- Rain resistance: 6 hours
- Foot traffic: 8 hours
- Vehicle traffic: 4 days
Conditions: Do not apply if rain is expected within 6 hours, or if the temperature is below 10 °C or above 35 °C. Avoid application in direct, hot sunlight as this can cause the sealer to dry too quickly, leading to lap marks and uneven finish.
Clean-Up: Wash tools and equipment with water immediately after use.
Why Choose Waterbased?
The Dulux Avista Waterbased Concrete Sealer represents the next generation of concrete protection — combining the performance characteristics traditionally associated with solvent-based products (UV resistance, durability, hot tyre pickup resistance) with the safety, convenience, and environmental benefits of water-based technology. It is particularly well suited to projects where odour is a concern, such as occupied homes, retail spaces, and interior garage conversions.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I really use this sealer indoors?
Yes — and this is one of its standout features. The water-based, low-VOC formula means there are no harsh solvent fumes, making it safe and comfortable to apply in enclosed garages, basements, retail spaces, and interior concrete floors. As with any coating, ensure reasonable ventilation during application and drying, but you will not experience the overwhelming chemical odour associated with solvent-based products.
2. Do I need to apply a primer first?
No primer is required for most applications. This sealer can be applied directly to clean, prepared concrete and is also compatible over existing solvent-based and water-based sealers. If the concrete is particularly porous or dusty, a first thinned coat (diluted 10% with water) can help seal the surface and improve the finish of subsequent coats — however this is generally unnecessary for standard residential concrete.
3. How does the waterbased sealer compare to the solvent-based General Purpose Sealer?
Both products provide excellent protection, but they suit different priorities. The waterbased sealer offers lower odour, easier clean-up, better coverage per litre, and can be used indoors. The solvent-based General Purpose Sealer provides greater film hardness, deeper colour enhancement, and may offer slightly longer service life in harsh exterior conditions. For interior use or projects where fumes are a concern, choose the waterbased option. For maximum exterior durability with a rich finish, the solvent-based option may be preferred.
4. Will this sealer resist tyre marks on my garage floor?
Yes. The Dulux Avista Waterbased Concrete Sealer is formulated with good marking and hot tyre pickup resistance. Whilst no sealer is completely immune to tyre marking — particularly from high-performance or very soft compound tyres — this product performs well under normal residential conditions. For best results, allow the full 4-day vehicle traffic cure time before parking on the surface.
5. How long will the finish last before I need to reseal?
In typical residential conditions, expect 2–4 years for exterior surfaces and 3–5+ years for interior floors before a maintenance coat is needed. Factors that influence longevity include sun exposure, traffic volume, cleaning frequency, and whether the surface is covered or fully exposed. Signs that resealing is due include loss of sheen, reduced water beading, and visible wear in high-traffic areas.
6. Can I use this on my exposed aggregate driveway?
Absolutely. The waterbased sealer is approved for exposed aggregate and works well to enhance the natural stone colours without making the surface look artificially glossy. The semi-gloss sheen brings out the character of the stones whilst providing protection against staining and weathering. Because exposed aggregate has more surface texture, expect coverage at the lower end of the range (closer to 5 m²/L).
7. What is the shelf life, and how should I store leftover product?
When stored in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and frost, the shelf life is approximately 24 months from the date of manufacture. Do not allow the product to freeze, as this can irreversibly damage the formulation. Partially used pails should be resealed promptly to prevent skinning. If the product has been stored for an extended period, stir gently and test on a small area before full application.
