Dulux Avista Resurfacing Accelerator 4L — Fast-Track Your Concrete Resurfacing in Cool Weather

The Dulux Avista Resurfacing Accelerator is a calcium chloride-based liquid additive designed to speed up the setting and drying times of the Dulux Avista Resurfacing Compound in cooler temperatures. When working in conditions between 10 °C and 15 °C, standard curing times can extend significantly — this accelerator ensures your resurfacing project stays on schedule by accelerating the chemical reaction between cement and water.

This 4-litre bottle provides enough accelerator for 8–11 bags of Dulux Avista Resurfacing Compound, making it an essential cold-weather addition for professional concreters and DIYers who need to complete resurfacing projects efficiently, even when temperatures drop. It is mixed directly into the gauging water before combining with the resurfacing compound for even distribution throughout the mix.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Faster Setting in Cool Weather: Counteracts the retarding effect of low temperatures (10–15 °C), keeping your project on track when conditions are less than ideal.
  • Calcium Chloride Formula: 32% w/w solution — the industry-standard accelerator for cement-based products.
  • Simple Dosing: Add 350–500 mL per batch of resurfacing compound — easy to measure and mix.
  • Cost-Effective Coverage: One 4L bottle accelerates 8–11 bags of compound.
  • Compatible System: Designed specifically for the Dulux Avista Resurfacing system — guaranteed compatibility.

Ideal Applications

  • Resurfacing concrete driveways in cooler months
  • Accelerating cure times for patios and paths during autumn and winter
  • Commercial resurfacing projects with tight deadlines in marginal temperatures
  • Any Dulux Avista Resurfacing Compound application where ambient temperature is 10–15 °C

Usage Guidance

When to Use: Use the accelerator when the ambient temperature is between 10 °C and 15 °C. Above 15 °C, the accelerator is generally not required as standard curing rates are sufficient. Below 10 °C, concrete work is not recommended — even with an accelerator, curing will be excessively slow and final strength may be compromised.

Mixing Instructions (per batch):

  1. Add 350–500 mL of Accelerator to a clean bucket.
  2. Add 3.25–3.5 litres of clean water.
  3. Add the Colour Oxide (if using) and Resurfacing Compound, then mix to a uniform consistency.

Dosage Guidance:

  • Maximum accelerator (500 mL per batch): accelerates 8 bags of compound
  • Minimum accelerator (350 mL per batch): accelerates 11 bags of compound
  • Use less water for faster curing; keep water to the minimum required for workability.
  • Do not exceed 500 mL of accelerator per batch.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry area in the original container. Keep tightly sealed when not in use. Protect from freezing.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I use the accelerator in warm weather to make the compound set even faster?

No. The accelerator is designed for use in cool conditions (10–15 °C) only. In warm weather (above 15 °C), using the accelerator may cause the compound to set too rapidly — leading to cracking, poor workability, and reduced final strength. In hot weather, you may actually need a retarder to slow the set, not an accelerator.

2. What happens if I add more than 500 mL of accelerator per batch?

Overdosing can cause flash setting (the mix stiffens almost immediately and becomes unworkable), increased shrinkage cracking, and potential long-term durability issues. The maximum dosage of 500 mL per batch must not be exceeded. If you need faster setting than this provides, consider postponing the work until temperatures improve.

3. Is the accelerator compatible with coloured resurfacing compounds?

Yes. The accelerator is compatible with all Dulux Avista Colour Oxides and pre-coloured resurfacing compounds. The calcium chloride in the accelerator does not affect the colour performance of iron oxide pigments. However, at higher dosage rates, calcium chloride can slightly lighten some colours — if colour matching is critical, test a small batch first.

4. Can I use this accelerator with other brands of resurfacing compound?

This accelerator is formulated for the Dulux Avista Resurfacing system. Whilst calcium chloride is a universal cement accelerator, dosage rates and compatibility vary between manufacturers. For non-Avista products, consult the manufacturer for their recommended accelerator and dosage.

5. How should I adjust my technique when using the accelerator in cold weather?

Even with the accelerator, cold-weather resurfacing requires some adjustments: mix smaller batches to ensure each is applied before it begins to set; protect the finished surface from frost and rain during curing; extend the curing period before sealing; and avoid working in temperatures that will drop below 5 °C overnight. The accelerator helps — but it does not eliminate the challenges of cold-weather concreting.

6. Does the accelerator affect the final strength of the resurfacing compound?

At the recommended dosage, calcium chloride accelerators have no detrimental effect on final compressive strength. In fact, the accelerated early strength gain can be beneficial — it helps the surface resist damage from unexpected rain or foot traffic sooner. Long-term durability is not compromised when the product is used as directed.
