More Information

Overview

The Dulux Avista Pre-Sealer is a solvent-based sacrificial coating that protects freshly laid concrete during its curing period. Applied shortly after the concrete is finished, it shields the surface from dirt, dust, light rain and construction traffic while the concrete develops its full strength.

The 20L pail covers roughly 60 to 100 square metres. It is the first step in the Dulux Avista sealing system, and once the concrete has cured, typically 28 days, it is overcoated with a compatible solvent-based top-coat sealer. It can also be tinted with the Avista Sealer Colour Tints.

What You Need to Complete the Job

Apply the pre-sealer once the concrete is firm enough to walk on without marking, then let the slab cure. After roughly 28 days, overcoat with a solvent-based Dulux Avista sealer such as the General Purpose Matt or the Extended Wear Sealer. The full sealing system is in the Concrete Sealers range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a pre-sealer and a regular sealer?

A pre-sealer is a temporary, sacrificial coating applied to fresh concrete within the first few days after pouring, to protect it during the curing period. A regular sealer is the permanent top coat applied once the concrete has fully cured. The pre-sealer takes the brunt of construction traffic and weather so the concrete does not.

Can I leave the pre-sealer as the final finish?

No. The pre-sealer is not formulated for long-term exposure and must be overcoated with a compatible solvent-based top coat within 3 months. Leaving it uncoated beyond that can cause surface deterioration and may require stripping and reapplication.

How soon after pouring can I apply it?

Apply it as soon as the concrete is firm enough to walk on without leaving impressions, typically 24 to 48 hours after pouring, once the surface is dry and free of bleed water. Applying too early traps moisture and can cause hazing, blistering and adhesion failure.

Do I need to strip the pre-sealer before the top coat?

Generally no, the pre-sealer is designed to be overcoated directly. The surface must be clean, dry and free of loose material. If the pre-sealer has become badly worn, dirty or powdery, a light pressure wash and thorough drying may be needed before the top coat.
