RGL Metal Primer 20L
RGL Metal Primer is a high-performance primer developed by RGL Adhesives for metal substrates. It is designed for interior and exterior use on ferrous metal surfaces, and its job is to give the subsequent paint layers a strong, corrosion-resistant base to hold onto. On a roof restoration or a steelwork job, the primer is what seals the metal and stops rust working its way up through the topcoat, so the finish paint lasts.
Key Features
- Superior adhesion, a strong bond between the metal surface and the paint layers above
- Corrosion resistance, a protective barrier against rust and environmental factors
- Quick drying, touch dry in 1 hour, ready to recoat after 4 hours
- Versatile application across roofs, fences and machinery
- Compatible with a wide range of topcoat paints
- Suitable for interior and exterior ferrous metal surfaces
Specifications
- Product type: metal primer (base per product label, see transparency note)
- Application methods: brush, roller, spray
- Suitable substrates: ferrous metal surfaces
- Drying time: touch dry 1 hour, recoat after 4 hours
- Clean-up: solvent-based cleaner

Application Guidelines
Make sure the metal surface is clean, dry and free of rust, oil and other contaminants, then stir the primer thoroughly before use. Apply with a brush, roller or spray equipment for even coverage, and allow at least 1 hour to dry before a second coat or the topcoat. Once the primer is fully dry, apply the chosen topcoat for the final finish.
Applications
- Priming metal roofs before a roof paint topcoat
- Metal fences, gates and structural steelwork
- Machinery and equipment needing a protective basecoat
- Interior and exterior ferrous metal surfaces
What You Need To Complete The Job

Frequently Asked Questions
What metals does RGL Metal Primer suit?
It is designed for ferrous metal surfaces, covering the metal you typically find in roofing, fencing and machinery. The primer bonds to the prepared metal and gives the topcoat a stable base.
Why prime metal before painting?
Bare metal is reactive and corrodes under a paint film. The primer seals the surface and provides a corrosion-resistant barrier, which is what keeps the topcoat from failing and the metal from rusting through.
How fast does it dry?
It is touch dry in about 1 hour and ready to recoat after 4 hours, so a priming job can be finished and topcoated within a day.
Can I use it on a roof?
Yes. It is suited to metal roofs, fences and machinery. On a roof, prime the clean metal first, then apply an RGL roof paint topcoat for the finish.
Can I order for delivery or pickup?
Yes. You can order online and choose Australia-wide delivery or pickup from our Truganina trade counter in Melbourne’s west.
