Dulux Avista Liquid Release Agent Clear 15L — Professional Stamped Concrete Release
The Dulux Avista Liquid Release Agent Clear is a solvent-based release agent specifically formulated for use with polyurethane stamping moulds during the stamped concrete process. Applied to the concrete surface immediately before stamping, it prevents the textured moulds from adhering to the wet concrete — ensuring clean, crisp pattern transfer without surface tearing or pull-up.
Beyond its primary function as a release agent, this product also serves as a secondary colourant, creating subtle two-tone antiquing effects that enhance the depth and realism of stamped concrete patterns. For more pronounced colour effects, additional release agent can be sprayed over the surface after stamping (even once the concrete has hardened, but before sealing). This 15-litre container provides coverage for approximately 60–100 m² of stamped concrete.
Important: Treated surfaces must cure for 14–30 days before cleaning and sealing. Do not wash release agent down drains or into garden beds.
Key Features & Benefits
- Clean Mould Release: Prevents polyurethane stamping mats from sticking to fresh concrete, ensuring crisp, professional pattern definition.
- Secondary Colour Effect: Creates subtle two-tone highlighting that adds depth and realism to stamped patterns.
- Adjustable Colour Intensity: Light application for a subtle effect; additional spray after stamping for a bolder antique finish.
- 15L Coverage: One container treats approximately 60–100 m², depending on the desired colour effect.
- Solvent-Based Formula: Water-insoluble — will not wash away with light rain during the curing period.
Ideal Applications
- Stamped concrete driveways
- Stamped patios and pathways
- Decorative concrete featuring slate, stone, tile, or wood-grain stamp patterns
- Commercial stamped concrete installations
Application Guidance
Timing: Apply after the concrete has been placed, screeded, floated, and the colour hardener has been worked into the surface. The concrete should be at the correct stage for stamping — firm enough to support the weight of stampers but still impressionable.
Application: Using a long-bristled brush, apply a thin, even coat of release agent to the concrete surface immediately prior to stamping. Ensure complete coverage — missed areas will cause the stamping mats to stick and tear the surface.
Enhanced Colour Effect (Optional): For a stronger two-tone effect, lightly spray additional release agent over the surface after stamping is complete — this can be done even after the concrete has hardened but before sealing.
Curing Period: Allow the concrete to cure for 14–30 days (depending on weather conditions) before cleaning off excess release agent and applying the sealer. Do not wash or hose the surface during the curing period.
Sealing: After curing, clean the surface to remove loose release agent (avoid washing into drains), allow to dry, and apply a compatible Dulux Avista sealer such as the General Purpose Sealer, Extended Wear Sealer, or Coloured Concrete Sealer.
Safety: Solvent-based product — use in well-ventilated outdoor areas. Wear solvent-resistant gloves and safety glasses. Keep away from ignition sources.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the difference between liquid release agent and powder release agent?
Liquid release agents (like this product) are solvent-based and provide a subtle, even colour effect with less mess — they are preferred for cleaner job sites and urban areas. Powder release agents (such as Dulux Avista Release Agent Powder) are dry pigments broadcast onto the surface and produce a more pronounced, bolder antique effect. Powder can be messier in windy conditions but offers greater colour intensity. Both prevent stamping mats from sticking.
2. How long do I have to wait before I can stamp the concrete after applying the release agent?
The release agent is applied immediately before stamping — there is no waiting period. Brush it onto the surface and begin stamping straight away. The concrete must be at the correct consistency for stamping: firm enough to support worker weight without deep sinking, but still impressionable enough to take the pattern cleanly.
3. Why must I wait 14–30 days before sealing?
This waiting period allows the concrete to fully cure and for excess moisture to evaporate. Sealing too early traps moisture beneath the sealer film, which can cause whitening (blushing), blistering, delamination, and sealer failure. The release agent itself remains on the surface during this time — do not wash it off prematurely. The exact curing duration depends on weather: 14 days in hot, dry conditions; up to 30 days in cool or humid weather.
4. Will rain wash off the release agent during the curing period?
Because this is a solvent-based, water-insoluble formulation, light rain will not wash it away. However, heavy or persistent rain during the first few days may affect the colour effect and should be avoided if possible. Check the weather forecast before pouring and plan accordingly.
5. Can I use this release agent with any brand of stamping mats?
Yes — the release agent is compatible with all polyurethane and rubber stamping mats, regardless of brand. Its function is to create a barrier between the wet concrete and the stamp surface; it does not chemically interact with the mat material.
6. How do I clean the surface before sealing?
After the 14–30 day curing period, use a stiff-bristled broom or a light pressure wash (low pressure to avoid damaging the surface) to remove loose release agent residue. Do not allow wash water to enter stormwater drains — the release agent residue is a chemical contaminant. Collect and dispose of wash water responsibly. Allow the surface to dry completely before applying the sealer.
