More Information

Overview

Bostik Pipe Cement Type N Blue is a solvent cement for joining rigid PVC pressure and non-pressure pipes. It is a thickened, blue-tinted solvent cement that fills small gaps while chemically fusing the mating surfaces, so the finished joint is stronger than the pipe itself. It is a trade standard for stormwater, DWV, irrigation and pool plumbing.

The blue tint shows exactly where the cement has been applied, which reduces the risk of dry joints, and the fast initial grab means pipes can be handled quickly after assembly. It is supplied in 250ml and 500ml tins, and it complies with AS/NZS 3879 for PVC pipe and fittings solvent cements.

Key Features

  • Solvent cement for rigid PVC pressure and non-pressure pipes
  • Fast initial grab, fixture time from 30 seconds at 20 degrees Celsius
  • Gap-filling viscosity bridges minor misalignment up to 0.6mm
  • Blue tint shows application for a complete joint
  • Complies with AS/NZS 3879 for potable water and drainage
  • Works from 0 to 40 degrees Celsius, resists hot water to 60 degrees Celsius

Specifications

  • Pack sizes: 250ml and 500ml tins
  • Coverage: 250ml joins about 40 x 50mm sockets; 500ml about 80 x 50mm sockets
  • Fixture time: from 30 seconds at 20 degrees Celsius
  • Handling strength: under 15 minutes
  • Cure: allow 24 hours per 25mm of pipe diameter before pressure testing
  • Standard: AS/NZS 3879

Applications

  • Joining 90mm stormwater PVC pipe and fittings
  • DWV and sewer vent pipe work
  • Irrigation and pool plumbing
  • Potable water lines
  • General rigid PVC pressure pipe systems

What You Need to Complete the Job

Cut the pipe square, deburr the edge and dry-fit the joint first. Stir the cement, apply an even layer to both the spigot and the socket with the attached brush, then push the pipe fully home with a quarter-turn twist and hold for 30 seconds. Avoid stress on the joint for 15 minutes, and allow 24 hours per 25mm of pipe diameter before pressure testing. It pairs with the 90mm stormwater pipe and the slip coupling, and more fittings are in the PVC Fittings range.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast does it set?

The cement grabs in as little as 30 seconds at 20 degrees Celsius, and the joint reaches handling strength in under 15 minutes. That lets you assemble a long run of pipe quickly. Full cure takes longer, so allow 24 hours per 25mm of pipe diameter before pressure testing the system.

Can I use it on both pressure and non-pressure pipe?

Yes. Type N blue is formulated for rigid PVC pressure and non-pressure pipes, which covers stormwater, DWV, irrigation and pool plumbing as well as potable water lines. It is a thickened cement that fills small gaps and fuses the mating surfaces into a strong joint.

Does the blue colour matter?

The blue tint is a working feature, not just a colour. It shows exactly where the cement has been applied, so you can see that both the spigot and socket are fully coated before assembly. That visible application reduces the risk of dry joints that leak.

Do I need a primer with this cement?

For most PVC pipe and fittings, the cement can be applied directly to clean, lightly abraded surfaces. For best results on smooth or glazed pipe, wipe the surfaces with Bostik PVC priming fluid first. Always dry-fit the joint and make sure the surfaces are clean before applying the cement.
