More Information

Sutton Viper D105 4.0mm HSS Jobber Drill Bit

The Sutton Viper D105 is a 4.0mm high speed steel jobber drill bit, made to DIN338 dimensions and sold carded as a single bit. This is one of the most used sizes in a metalworker kit: it handles pilot holes, small clearance holes and general fabrication work in steel, aluminium, brass, wood and plastics. The Viper point is a 118 degree split point that self centers on the mark, so holes start clean and the bit needs less pressure than a conventional HSS drill.

Key Features

  • Viper point design delivers up to 2 times faster drilling than conventional HSS bits
  • 118 degree self centering split point
  • DIN338 HSS jobber geometry in a 4.0mm diameter
  • Reduced drilling pressure for better control
  • Suits machine and hand held drilling
  • Carded single bit for the toolbox

Specifications

What You Need To Complete The Job

A 4.0mm bit runs well in a standard drill at a fast speed with a steady feed. When you need to fix into concrete or brick, switch to an SDS masonry drill, and keep leather rigger gloves on for handling metal. The rest of the cutting range is under General Hand Tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 4mm drill bit used for?

A 4mm HSS bit is a general purpose pilot and clearance size used across metal and timber work. It is the common pilot for small machine screws, and a standard clearance for M4 bolts where the hole can be a touch oversize.

What speed should I drill steel with a 4mm bit?

Use a fast spindle speed and a moderate, steady feed. If the bit sings or smokes, ease off the pressure. Small HSS bits cut best at speed with light force, and forcing them at low revs is what breaks the point.

Is the 4mm size good for stainless steel?

It will drill stainless with patience, a slow speed and plenty of lubricant. For repeated stainless work the coated Viper Plus variant holds its edge longer; for light jobs this standard Viper bit is fine.

Can I use this bit for wood?

Yes. It drills timber cleanly and is often used to clear holes in timber for coach screws and bolts. Back the bit out regularly to clear sawdust and avoid burning the wood.
