More Information

Sutton Viper D105 11.0mm HSS Jobber Drill Bit

The Sutton Viper D105 is an 11.0mm high speed steel jobber drill bit, made to DIN338 dimensions and sold carded as a single bit. Eleven millimetre is a heavy fabrication size, the clearance for M11 fixings and a common step before opening out to 12mm. The Viper point is a 118 degree split point that self centers on the mark, so holes start clean and hold their line, and it drills up to 2 times faster than a conventional HSS bit with less pressure.

Key Features

  • Viper point design delivers up to 2 times faster drilling than conventional HSS bits
  • 118 degree self centering split point
  • DIN338 HSS jobber geometry in an 11.0mm diameter
  • Reduced drilling pressure for better control
  • Suits machine and hand held drilling
  • Carded single bit for the toolbox

Specifications

  • Diameter: 11.0mm
  • Type: HSS jobber drill bit, DIN338
  • Model: D105
  • Point: 118 degree split point, self centering
  • Materials: steel, aluminium, brass, wood and plastics

Applications

  • Clearance holes for M11 bolts and studding
  • Pilot holes for M12 and M16 fixings
  • Drilling steel, aluminium and brass
  • Heavy timber and fabrication work

What You Need To Complete The Job

An 11.0mm bit needs a drill with real torque and cutting oil on steel. For concrete and brick, use an SDS masonry drill instead, and keep leather rigger gloves on when handling cut metal. The rest of the cutting range lives in General Hand Tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sharpen an HSS drill bit?

Yes, an HSS bit can be resharpened on a bench grinder if you keep the point angles close to the original. A badly worn or chipped bit is easier to replace, but a quick regrind brings a good bit back to service for more work.

What is an 11mm drill bit used for?

An 11mm HSS bit is a clearance size for M11 fixings and a common pilot for larger bolts. It is a heavy fabrication size, used in structural steel, machinery mounts and big brackets.

What speed should I run an 11mm bit at?

Use a moderate speed and a firm, steady feed. At this diameter the bit cuts best at a slower spindle speed than a small bit, with enough pressure to keep the edge biting through the steel.

Can this bit be used in a drill stand?

Yes, a drill stand or pillar drill is a good match at this size because it holds the drill square and keeps the feed steady. It is the right tool for accurate holes in heavy material.

Do I need a pilot hole for 11mm?

For thin and mild steel the split point starts 11mm holes directly. For thick plate, drill a 5mm or 6mm pilot first to reduce the load and keep the final hole straight.
