Expoze Retarder 20 L
Expoze Retarder is a water‑based concrete surface retarder specifically formulated to produce exposed aggregate finishes by delaying the surface setting of fresh concrete while allowing the underlying concrete to cure normally.
Description & Function
- Delays surface mortar set: applied after finishing, it prevents the top layer of cement paste from hardening too quickly, enabling controlled aggregate exposure upon washing.
- Easy application: use a low‑pressure sprayer, roller or brush to achieve uniform coverage before the concrete loses its sheen.
- Removable by washing: once the subsurface has developed sufficient strength (typically 8–24 hours depending on weather), the soft surface layer is washed off with water or pressure washer, revealing the aggregate.
Performance & Coverage
- Coverage rate: approximately 4–5 m² per litre, equating to 80–100 m² per 20 L container—coverage may vary based on surface texture and porosity.
- Depth of exposure: 2–6 mm typical, influenced by finish type—e.g. wood‑float vs steel‑trowel—and environmental conditions.
Comparison with Similar Products
Product | Packaging | Coverage | Exposure Depth |
Expoze Retarder | 20 L | ~80–100 m² | ~2–6 mm |
EZ EXPOSE (Euclid) | 18.9 L | 4.3–7.4 m²/L | Micro‑etch to deep |
Beton Xpose | up to 20 L | — | 12–24 h delay |
Applications
Ideal for horizontal concrete surfaces such as driveways, patios, sidewalks, pool surrounds and precast panels, where a decorative exposed aggregate finish or improved mechanical key is desired. Acts as a cost‑effective alternative to mechanical abrasion or acid etching.
Usage & Storage
- Apply after bleed water dissipates but before final set.
- Ensure consistent spray coverage—two light passes better than one heavy coat.
- Wash off when surface is firm but before the concrete fully hardens—typically 2–14 hours in warm conditions, or up to 24 hours in moderate climates.
- Clean tools with water immediately after use.
- Shelf life: about 12 months in sealed container, when stored between 5 °C and 35 °C.
The Expoze Retarder 20 L delivers a reliable method for crafting exposed aggregate concrete finishes. With controlled surface delay, generous coverage, and simple water-based removal, it offers a cost-effective, visually appealing solution for decorative concrete.
