More Information

Sutton D501 22mm Spade Bit

The Sutton D501 is a 22mm spade bit built for fast, clean holes in timber and light building materials. Sutton states the range drills up to 5 times faster than standard spade bits, with a power chip breaker and a heavy duty shank that clear the waste quickly and keep the bit running true. The 22mm size is a good match for cable and pipe runs where a 20mm hole is just too tight.

What You Need To Complete The Job

A 22mm bit runs well in a drill with a bit of torque. For deeper holes, add a D502 300mm extension, and for a full range the D501 3 piece set is the match. For masonry, use an SDS masonry drill instead. More cutting gear is under Carpentry Tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why pick a 22mm bit over a 20mm?

When a 20mm hole is too tight for the cable, pipe or fitting you are running, a 22mm gives a little more room while still being easy to drive. It is a useful in between size for electrical and plumbing chases through timber.

How do I keep the bit from binding?

Feed the bit steadily and let the chip breaker clear the waste. If the bit starts to bind, back it out and clear the hole, then continue. Keeping the drill square to the work also stops the bit pinching in the cut.

Can this bit drill through plywood and particle board?

Yes. The D501 cuts plywood, particle board and other sheet materials cleanly, and the chip breaker keeps the waste moving so the bit does not clog. For a clean edge on particle board, back the work where you can.

Does the 5x faster claim hold in hard timber?

Sutton rates the range up to 5 times faster than standard spade bits. In dense hardwood the gap narrows because the timber is tougher, but the power chip breaker and heavy duty shank still cut noticeably faster and cleaner than a plain spade bit.
