More Information

Sutton Viper D105 5.0mm HSS Jobber Drill Bit

The Sutton Viper D105 is a 5.0mm high speed steel jobber drill bit, made to DIN338 and sold carded as a single bit. At 5mm it is a true general purpose size, used for pilot holes, clearance holes and everyday metal fabrication in steel, aluminium, brass, wood and plastics. The Viper point is a 118 degree split point that self centers on the mark, starts clean without wandering, and cuts with less pressure than a conventional HSS drill bit.

Key Features

  • Viper point design delivers up to 2 times faster drilling than conventional HSS bits
  • 118 degree self centering split point
  • DIN338 HSS jobber geometry in a 5.0mm diameter
  • Reduced pressure for cleaner hand held drilling
  • Suits ferrous and non ferrous materials
  • Carded single bit

What You Need To Complete The Job

A 5.0mm bit is a workhorse size for a standard drill, run at a fast speed with a steady feed. For concrete and brick, use an SDS masonry drill instead, and browse the Power Tools range for a drill to match the job. The rest of the kit is under General Hand Tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 5mm bit good for general DIY?

Yes. A 5mm HSS bit is one of the most useful sizes in a home kit because it covers pilot holes, bolt clearances and general metal and timber work. It is small enough for fine pilot holes and big enough for most everyday fixings, so it earns its place in any toolbox. The self centering point also makes it forgiving in a hand held drill.

What is a 5mm drill bit used for?

A 5mm HSS bit is a common pilot size for 6mm machine screws and a standard clearance for M5 bolts. It is also the size many people reach for when drilling sheet steel for self tappers and small brackets.

What speed should I run a 5mm bit at?

Run it at a fast speed in steel with a moderate feed and a little cutting oil. At this diameter the bit is still slim, so forcing it at low revs risks flexing and breaking; let the point cut.

Can I use it in a cordless drill?

Yes, a 5mm bit is well within the range of a standard 18V cordless drill. Use a sharp bit and a steady feed, and it drills steel and aluminium without trouble.

Does the split point help on curved surfaces?

Yes. On round bar or tube the self centering point holds the bit on the mark instead of skidding off the curve. Start slowly, let the point bite, then feed through at a steady speed.
