R-Thermal-Spacer
The R-Thermal-Spacer is a 1200mm steel spacer that holds roof insulation at its full thickness under metal roofing. When insulation is compressed by the roof sheet it loses most of its R-value, so the spacer lifts the sheeting clear of the blanket and keeps the thermal layer working. It is designed by roofers, with a 1.5mm steel body and three legs, and each spacer comes pre-loaded with six structural screws so it is ready to fix straight out of the box.
Key Features
- Maintains required insulation thickness in metal roofing systems
- Minimises thermal bridging for better energy efficiency
- 1200mm long, available in 120mm, 80mm and 60mm heights
- 1.5mm steel with 3 legs for structural strength
- Pre-loaded with 6 structural screws, fixed at 45 degrees and visible from the top
- 40mm gap between screws fits the narrowest purlins
Specifications

How It Works
The spacer sits between the roof purlin and the roof sheeting, lifting the sheet so the insulation blanket stays at full thickness underneath. The 45 degree screw pattern and the 40mm gap between screws let the spacer fix onto narrow purlins, and the steel construction holds its shape under the roof load. Keeping the insulation uncompressed preserves its thermal performance and helps the build meet NCC energy efficiency requirements.
Applications
- Metal roofing systems with insulation under the sheet
- New builds where insulation thickness must be maintained
- Cyclonic-rated construction (C2 and C3)
- Improving building energy ratings and NCC compliance
What You Need To Complete The Job
Pair the spacer with a roofing blanket to insulate under the sheet, and seal the laps with reinforced foil tape. Browse the Roof Insulation range for blankets and sarking.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an insulation spacer for?
It lifts the roof sheeting off the insulation so the blanket stays at full thickness. Compressed insulation loses most of its R-value, so the spacer is what keeps the thermal performance of the roof system intact.
What heights are available?
The spacer comes in 120mm, 80mm and 60mm leg heights, all in 1200mm lengths. Match the height to the thickness of the insulation blanket you are installing.
How is it fixed?
Each spacer is pre-loaded with six structural screws that fix at a 45 degree angle, visible from the top. The 40mm gap between screws lets it mount onto narrow purlins without extra drilling.
Is it rated for cyclonic areas?
Yes. The spacer is certified for N2, N3 and N4 non-cyclonic wind classifications and C2 and C3 cyclonic classifications, and it is tested to the AS1170 and AS4600 structural standards.
