More Information

Sutton Viper D105 2.5mm HSS Jobber Drill Bit

The Sutton Viper D105 is a 2.5mm jobber drill bit made from high speed steel and sold carded as a single bit. The Viper point is a 118 degree split point that self centers on the mark, which makes it noticeably easier to start a hole than a standard HSS bit and cuts down the pressure you have to lean on the drill. Sutton builds the range for machine and hand held drilling in steel, aluminium, brass, wood and plastics.

Key Features

  • Up to 2 times faster drilling speeds than conventional HSS bits
  • 118 degree self centering split point
  • DIN338 HSS jobber geometry in a 2.5mm diameter
  • Less pressure required when drilling
  • Suits ferrous and non ferrous materials
  • Carded single bit

Specifications

  • Diameter: 2.5mm
  • Type: HSS jobber drill bit, DIN338
  • Model: D105
  • Point: 118 degree split point, self centering
  • Materials: steel, aluminium, brass, wood and plastics

Applications

  • Pilot holes for machine screws and self tappers
  • Opening holes for larger fasteners
  • Drilling aluminium and brass
  • General metal and timber drilling

What You Need To Complete The Job

A 2.5mm bit works best in a drill running at a fast speed with a steady feed. When the job moves to concrete, use an SDS masonry drill instead, and keep a hacksaw close by for cutting metal to length. The General Hand Tools range has the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the split point do?

The split point cuts at the centre of the bit, so it grips the surface and pulls the hole straight instead of skidding sideways. That means cleaner starts, no wandering along the mark, and less pressure needed on the drill handle.

Can this bit drill wood and plastic?

Yes. Although it is an HSS bit aimed at metal, it drills wood and plastics cleanly at small diameters. Use a moderate feed and pull the bit out regularly to clear the flutes on deeper holes.

How should I store a 2.5mm bit?

Keep it in the card or in a drill index sleeve so the cutting edges do not knock against other tools. Small bits dull fast when they rattle loose in a draw, and a carded bit like this one protects the point until you need it.

Is this the right size for a pilot hole?

For many 3mm and 4mm self tappers a 2.5mm pilot is a good start in steel. For timber, pilot sizes are less critical. Match the pilot to the fastener and the material, and test on a scrap piece first if the fit matters.
