Not All Colorbond Suppliers Are Equal: What Melbourne Builders Actually Check Before Placing an Order

Melbourne Builders on Finding Colorbond Suppliers

Someone arrives at our Truganina store with a rough sketch, a phone photo of their existing roof, and a colour in mind. They have already been quoted by two other suppliers. Sometimes the prices are lower than ours. But by the time they have asked a few questions, they realise that a lower price on the sheet is not always what it appears to be.

Finding a reliable Colorbond supplier in Melbourne is genuinely important. COLORBOND roofing is one of the most significant material investments a homeowner or builder makes, with installed costs varying considerably depending on profile, pitch complexity, and project size. The sheet you purchase today will be on that roof for 40 years. Getting the product, the thickness, and the colour right at the point of order matters enormously.

Here is what we walk every buyer through at Singh Roofing Supplies, and what you should be checking with any supplier before you commit.

1. Make Sure You Are Buying Genuine BlueScope Steel

This is the first thing we confirm with every order we fill.

All COLORBOND steel we supply at Singh Roofing Supplies is sourced directly from BlueScope, Australia’s manufacturer of COLORBOND steel. That matters for one very important reason: warranty.

BlueScope’s product warranty on COLORBOND steel covers:

  • Up to 36 years against corrosion to perforation under natural weathering
  • Up to 20 years against the paint system flaking or peeling due to natural weathering

Those warranties apply when the product is purchased through an authorised supply chain and installed correctly. They do not apply to product sourced from grey-market or unverifiable channels.

When you order from us, you get the genuine article with documentation to back it up. It is worth asking that question of any supplier you consider, not just us.

2. Corrugated or Trimdek? Getting the Profile Right

This is the most common question we answer at the counter, and it is worth taking a minute to get right.

COLORBOND Corrugated Roofing is the classic round-wave profile that has been on Australian homes, sheds, and farm buildings for generations. It is extremely versatile, matches existing corrugated iron roofing for extensions and blends, and is one of the easiest profiles for a confident DIYer to install.

We stock two BMT (Base Metal Thickness) options:

  • COLORBOND Corrugated Roofing 0.42 BMT — suited to carports, patios, garage linings, sheds, and light domestic roofing where purlin spacing is 900 mm or less.
  • COLORBOND Corrugated Roofing 0.48 BMT — the stronger option for residential roof replacements, wide spans, and applications in higher wind zones. This is our most popular residential recommendation across Melbourne.

COLORBOND Trimdek Roofing has a bold trapezoidal rib profile that suits modern home designs, extensions, and commercial sheds. It handles low-pitch roofs well, with a minimum installation pitch of just 2 degrees, and its wider rib spacing gives it a cleaner, more contemporary look than corrugated.

We also stock Trimdek in two BMT options:

  • COLORBOND Trimdek 0.42 BMT — for light commercial, shed roofing, and residential walling.
  • COLORBOND Trimdek 0.48 BMT — for residential roof replacements, commercial builds, and any project where a longer span or stronger sheet is required.

Our rule of thumb: if you are replacing an existing residential roof in Melbourne, start with 0.48 BMT. If your project is a smaller outbuilding, patio, or shed, 0.42 BMT is perfectly appropriate. Not sure? Give us a call and tell us your purlin spacing. We will sort it in two minutes.

3. Choosing the Right Colour for Melbourne’s Climate

This is where we see buyers spend the most time, and rightly so. Colour is a 40-year decision.

All standard COLORBOND colours (except Night Sky) include Thermatech solar reflectance technology, which reflects infrared heat from the sun rather than absorbing it. In plain terms: every COLORBOND sheet from us performs better thermally than standard painted steel. But there is still a meaningful performance gap between lighter and darker shades.

Here is how we frame it for Melbourne customers:

  • Surfmist, Classic Cream, and Paperbark are the best performers for keeping roof spaces cool. These are strong choices for any home without premium ceiling insulation, or for west-facing roof planes that cop the afternoon heat across Melbourne’s outer suburbs.
  • Woodland Grey and Shale Grey are consistently our top sellers in Victoria right now. Both have improved significantly with Thermatech, but they still absorb more heat than lighter options. If your client is choosing these, we always recommend pairing the roof with quality sarking and ceiling insulation.
  • Monument, Basalt, and Night Sky are the darkest options in the range. They look stunning on contemporary Melbourne builds, but they need quality insulation and roof ventilation to work well in summer. Night Sky does not include Thermatech, so for sun-exposed roofs it is worth a practical conversation with the homeowner before selecting it.

Browse all 22 colours and their thermal classifications on our COLORBOND Colour Chart page before you come in, and bring the page reference with you. It speeds up the conversation considerably.

4. Do Not Forget the Flashings

One detail that delays more Melbourne projects than any other: ordering the sheets without ordering the matching flashings at the same time.

Flashings — ridge cappings, apron flashings, valley irons, barge cappings, and parapet cappings — must be in the same COLORBOND colour as your roof sheets. When they come from different batches or different suppliers, the colour match can be off, especially in Surfmist and Classic Cream where even a small shade variation is visible.

At Singh Roofing Supplies, we manufacture and supply custom COLORBOND flashings in the same colour as your sheets, cut and folded to your specifications. When you place your sheet order with us, add the flashings at the same time and we produce them to match.

Bring your measurements or download our Custom Flashing Form and fill it in before you order. It saves a follow-up call and ensures everything arrives together.

5. Five Things to Check With Any Colorbond Supplier

We think these questions are worth asking of us, and of anyone else you are considering. Transparency matters.

  • Is the product genuinely BlueScope-sourced? Ask for confirmation and warranty documentation. Legitimate suppliers will not hesitate.
  • Do you hold stock or make to order? At Singh Roofing Supplies, we hold Woodland Grey, Monument, Surfmist, Ironstone, and other fast-moving colours in corrugated 0.48 BMT for immediate pickup or next-day Melbourne metro delivery. Custom lengths and less common colours are roll-formed to order, typically within 48 hours.
  • Can you supply matching flashings in the same colour? If the answer is no, or “you will need to source those elsewhere,” that creates a risk of colour mismatch on your finished project.
  • Is there a person I can speak to for technical advice? Our team at Truganina can tell you the right BMT for your purlin spacing, the right profile for your pitch, and the right colour for your local council guidelines.
  • What is the return policy on faulty or damaged product? We hold a 30-day return policy on faulty or damaged items. Check that any supplier you use offers the same.

Frequently Asked Questions on Colorbond Supplier Melbourne

1. Does it matter whether I buy Colorbond from an authorised BlueScope distributor?

Yes. Buying through an authorised stockist like Singh Roofing Supplies protects your access to BlueScope’s product warranty of up to 36 years corrosion resistance and 20 years paint performance.

2. Which Colorbond colour do Melbourne homeowners choose most in 2025?

Woodland Grey, Monument, and Surfmist are consistently our top three sellers across Victoria. Woodland Grey dominates contemporary builds; Surfmist remains the go-to for thermal performance and coastal-adjacent suburbs.

3. What is the difference between 0.42 BMT and 0.48 BMT Colorbond sheets?

BMT stands for Base Metal Thickness. At 0.48 BMT the sheet is stronger, better suited to wider purlin spacings, and our standard recommendation for residential roof replacements across Melbourne’s climate and wind zones.
