About the EERA Klip-Lok and Trimdek Turn Up/Down Tool

The EERA turn up/turn down tool, known as the Gilbert, is a hand tool for bending the flat pans of metal roof sheets up or down at the sheet ends. It suits Klip-Lok, Trimdek and a list of similar profiles, and it forms clean, consistent turns in seconds with no power tools. It is supplied by EERA Roofing Tools.

The tool is a T bar with a slotted end. You slip the slot over the end of the pan and lever it to form the turn. It is light, it fits in a tool bag, and it does a job that is easy to get wrong with pliers or a makeshift bender.

What Turn Ups and Turn Downs Do

Turning the pans is a standard step at the ends of metal roof sheets. A turn up is a bend formed upwards at the high end of each pan, where the sheet runs under the ridge capping or flashing. It closes off the open end of the pan behind the capping. A turn down is a bend formed downwards at the low end of each pan, so the end of the pan points into the gutter.

Each turn is a small bend, but one is needed at the end of every pan on every sheet, so on a full roof the tool is used many times over. The installation guide for your roof sheet sets out where turn ups and turn downs are required for that profile.

What You Need to Complete the Job

The tool suits the sheets we stock, including Colorbond Metlok 700 and Colorbond Trimdek roofing. To fit the ridge or wall flashing over the same roof, pair it with the matching EERA notcher, such as the Klip-Lok 700 flashing notcher. The rest of the range is in our Metal Roofing Tools section.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which roof sheets does the tool work on?

EERA lists Klip-Lok, clip fixed steel, architectural cladding, Metlok 700, Topdek 700, Trimdek, Trimclad, Monoclad and 5 rib profiles. These all have flat pans between the ribs, which is where the turn is formed. If your sheet is not on the list, call us on (03) 9394 1400 before ordering and we can check it with EERA.

Do I need power tools to use it?

No. The tool is used by hand. You fit the slotted end over the end of the pan and lever it up or down to form the turn. That makes it practical on the roof, where running a lead or carrying a cordless tool for one small bend is not worth the effort.

Why turn up the high end of the sheet?

A turn up closes off the open high end of each pan, where the sheet sits under the ridge capping or flashing. It is a standard detail at the top of trapezoidal and clip fixed roof sheets. A turn down at the gutter end bends the end of the pan down towards the gutter. Check the installation guide for your roof sheet to see where each turn is required on your roof.

Is this the same job as a flashing notcher?

No. The turn up/down tool bends the pans of the roof sheet itself, at the ridge end or the gutter end. A flashing notcher cuts rib shaped notches in the flashing that sits over the sheet. On a Klip-Lok or Trimdek roof you may use both: this tool on the sheet ends, then the matching EERA notcher on the ridge or wall flashing.
